From the moment I boarded the plane with my camera packed and passport in hand, I felt a familiar flutter of excitement—a mix of nerves, anticipation, and pure joy. Destination weddings have a special kind of magic, and this one was especially close to my heart. Just weeks after capturing my very first wedding, I found myself heading to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, to celebrate the love story of Emily and Alex; one of my oldest and dearest friends.
Emily and I go way back; to grade one. Watching her grow into the brilliant, hardworking, and deeply loving woman she is today has been a privilege. So being invited not just as a guest but as her content creator felt like a full-circle moment I’ll never forget. It was the perfect blend of personal and professional, and every moment I captured felt like a gift.
A Destination Wedding Is More Than Just One Day; it’s a Week of Memories
What I love most about destination weddings is how they unfold like stories, stretched beautifully over days rather than hours. Every sunrise and sunset becomes part of the narrative, every casual laugh or unexpected moment a brushstroke on the canvas.
From the second I arrived in Punta Cana, there was a warm energy in the air; welcoming, vibrant, and joy-filled. At the welcome dinner, the kind of laughter that only close friends can share filled the room. One of my favourite moments? All the guys unknowingly showing up in the exact same shirt. It wasn’t planned, but the surprise and ensuing jokes made for memories that still make me smile.
Throughout the week, I wove myself into the celebration, capturing everything from laid-back coffee runs to spontaneous beach hangs and all the beautiful chaos in between. Then, of course, came the big day.
Ocean Breezes, Heartfelt Vows, and a Beach Party to Remember
The setting was breathtaking: Dreams Royal Beach, where the turquoise waves kissed the shore and the soft ocean breeze carried the scent of salt and possibility. Emily and Alex’s ceremony was intimate and effortless, held just steps from the water’s edge.
Their vows were a perfect reflection of their relationship, honest, playful, and deeply personal. There were inside jokes shared in whispers, laughter that bubbled up naturally, and those quiet moments that only two people deeply in love truly understand.
After the ceremony, cocktail hour melted into a barefoot beach party. The sunset cast a golden glow over everyone, and the music pulsed as friends and family danced with abandon, the joy palpable under the open sky.
I found myself stepping back for a moment toward the night’s end, sand between my toes, camera ready and simply soaking it all in. Watching two souls so in sync, surrounded by their favourite people in one of the world’s most beautiful places, reminded me why I love this work so much.
