Capturing Renee & Max’s Wedding in Northern Ontario

There’s something magical about summers in Northern Ontario. The air feels lighter, the sunsets last a little longer, and the energy buzzes with warmth and possibility. This August, I had the honour of capturing a wedding that wasn’t just a wedding, it was a piece of my own heart.

Max and Renee’s Thunder Bay celebration wasn’t simply an event on a calendar. It was a heartbeat. A summer story full of laughter, nostalgia, and the kind of love that draws everyone into its glow.

From the very first moment of the day, I could feel that energy. The soft hum of hairdryers and quiet giggles of bridesmaids filled the bride’s getting-ready room. Renee was surrounded by women who adore her; their hands smoothing fabric, adjusting veils, tucking stray curls into place. The love in that room was palpable.

Later, I headed to the hotel where Max and his groomsmen were getting ready. The atmosphere was the total opposite: laughter, teasing, and that unmistakable “wedding-day buzz” that fills the air when everything is about to change. Max’s excitement was written all over his face.

As the morning unfolded, I wasn’t alone in capturing these moments. Working alongside an incredible team of vendors made the day feel even more seamless. From Dana’s (Ilo Photo) eye for light to Geo's (Dream Heart Creative) ability to bottle up emotion in motion, it was inspiring to watch everyone’s talents come together for Renee and Max.

From there, the day turned like chapters in a novel. At Renee’s parents’ home, small moments turned into treasures. Bridesmaids slipped into their dresses, the bride’s mom watched her daughter with eyes full of memories, and a hush fell over the room as Renee shared a first look with her dad and her closest friends. These were the kinds of moments that stay with you, the ones you can feel even as you press the record button.

And then, as the ceremony began, everything shifted. Surrounded by more than 100 guests, Renee and Max said their vows surrounded by love. There was joy, there were tears, and there was that unmistakable feeling of two families weaving themselves together.

For me, it was more than just another wedding. It was one of my first larger celebrations, a chance to experience the beautiful chaos of a big wedding day, yet still find those intimate, soulful moments tucked in between. I found myself reflecting on my work as a content creator and realizing that every wedding, big or small, near or far, carries its own rhythm, its own heartbeat. That’s what makes this job so incredible.

As the sun dipped lower and the dance floor filled, I set my camera down for a brief moment and just watched. Friends twirled each other, glasses clinked, and laughter echoed. Being surrounded by familiar faces made it all feel like home, even in the midst of a 12+ hour workday. And when the formalities faded and the music swelled, I joined them, celebrating love in its purest form.

This wedding reminded me why I started Moments by Curl Media: every couple, every love story, every wedding is authentically unique. Whether it’s a cozy elopement, a grand celebration, or a sun-soaked destination affair, each one deserves to be captured in a way that feels true to them.
